About Early Covered Tankard with Diamond Decor

Nicolaus Weiss

The present fire-gilded lidded tankard is adorned with masterfully executed diamond decor on the body and lid, representing a beautiful example of Nuremberg early Baroque art. Rising above a slightly flared footring with tongue ornamentation is a cylindrical, slightly conical body with a Rococo handle attached to the side. The thumbrest is formed as a volute. The flat, vaulted, and richly decorated lid features three chiseled S-shaped straps in the center, transitioning into a kind of canopy and concluding with a pinecone.

Bottom marked with assay and master marks
Assay mark: N in a circle for Nuremberg, 1613–1629
